How to Crochet a Mini Heart in One Round

A tiny flat heart worked all at once inside a magic ring: double crochets for the round tops, half doubles down the sides and a single chain for the point.

This heart is the quickest crochet shape you'll ever make. It's one round, worked entirely into a magic ring, and the whole shape comes from the order of the stitches: tall double crochets for the two rounded tops, shorter half doubles down the sides, and one chain for the point. Pull the ring closed and the stitches bunch into a heart.

Make a handful for appliques, card toppers, gift tags or fridge magnets. The pattern is from Elise's short beginner video on her lilthings channel.

Materials

  • 5-ply milk cotton (Elise uses pink)
  • 3.0 mm hook
  • Scissors and a darning needle
  • Optional: a 7 × 1 mm magnet and glue for a fridge magnet

The pattern

Everything is worked into one magic ring, over the tail.

magic ring, ch 2, 3 dc, 3 hdc, ch 1, 3 hdc, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st into the ring

Step by step:

  1. Start: make a magic ring and chain 2 to reach double crochet height.
  2. Right lobe: work 3 dc into the ring for the rounded top, then 3 hdc to taper down the side.
  3. Point: chain 1. This single chain makes the sharp tip at the bottom.
  4. Left lobe: work 3 hdc, then 3 dc into the same ring, mirroring the first side.
  5. Top dip: chain 2 and slip stitch into the centre of the ring. This pulls the middle of the top down between the two lobes.
  6. Close: cut the yarn and pull the ring's tail hard until the centre hole disappears. Weave in both tails.

That's 12 stitches plus three chains in a single round.

Make it look like a heart

The shape comes from how tightly you close the ring. Pull the tail slowly: the stitches slide together and the lobes round out. If you stop too early, you get a fan; if you pull firmly, a heart.

Then pinch the point and the top dip into place with your fingers. A little steam from an iron (held above the heart, not touching it) helps it keep the shape.

Ways to use it

  • Fridge magnet: glue a 7 × 1 mm magnet to the back.
  • Applique: sew it onto a hat, a bag or a granny square.
  • Garland: chain between hearts as you make them and you get a string of hearts.
  • Card topper: glue it onto a handmade card or a gift tag.

Frequently asked questions

My ring won't close. What happened?

Some stitches were worked around only the loop of the ring and not around the tail too. Undo it and work all stitches over both strands. Our magic ring guide shows how.

Can I make a bigger heart?

Use thicker yarn and a bigger hook; the stitch sequence stays the same. Adding more stitches to the ring doesn't work well, because the heart's shape depends on exactly these stitch heights.

What do "hdc" and "dc" mean in UK terms?

In UK patterns hdc is a half treble (htr) and dc is a treble (tr). The US and UK terms chart has the full list.
