Our patterns, photos, charts and guides take a lot of work to design, test and write. This page explains what you are welcome to do with them, what needs permission, and how to tell us about copyright problems.

What you can do

  • Make anything from our patterns for yourself, as gifts or to donate to charity.
  • Sell the finished items you make by hand from our patterns, for example at craft fairs or in your own online shop, in small quantities made by you. We would love a credit such as "Pattern by Double Crochet" with a link to the pattern, but it is not required.
  • Share a link to any page, and share a single photo of our work with a link back to the original page.
  • Print a pattern for your own use, and keep a copy on your own device.
  • Show off what you made. Post photos of your finished items anywhere you like; tagging us is welcome.

What needs our written permission

  • Copying, republishing, translating or sharing the text, charts or photos of a pattern or guide, in whole or in large part, including in groups, PDFs, videos, apps or on other websites.
  • Selling or giving away our patterns themselves, in print or digital form, or including them in kits.
  • Mass production, or selling items made from our patterns by employees or factories.
  • Using our photos to sell your own items. Please photograph the items you made.
  • Using our content to train machine learning or AI models, or in AI-generated products.

Write to copyright@doublecrochet.io and tell us what you would like to do. We are happy to consider requests from teachers, charities and small businesses.

Stitches and techniques

Crochet stitches and basic techniques are not owned by anyone, and nothing on this page stops you using them. Our copyright covers the way we have written, charted and photographed our patterns and guides.

Other people's work on our site

Some content on the site belongs to others, such as reader comments, articles written by readers and photos used under licence. The copyright in those stays with the people who own it. Photographs credited to other photographers, for example through Unsplash, are used under their own licences; if you want to reuse one, check its licence at the original source rather than copying it from our site.

Reporting copyright infringement

We respect the rights of designers and creators. If you believe that material on Double Crochet infringes your copyright, send a written notice to our designated copyright agent with the following information. These are the elements required by the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)):

  1. Your physical or electronic signature, or that of a person authorized to act for the copyright owner.
  2. A description of the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed.
  3. The address (URL) of the material on our site that you believe infringes, with enough detail for us to find it.
  4. Your name, postal address, telephone number and email address.
  5. A statement that you have a good faith belief that the use of the material is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law.
  6. A statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.

Designated copyright agent: DoubleCrochet io, BPM 374074, Zum Bürgerwehr 28, 54516 Wittlich, Germany. Email: copyright@doublecrochet.io.

Please note that you may be liable for damages if you knowingly make a false claim that material is infringing. If you are not sure whether something infringes your rights, consider seeking legal advice first.

Notices from outside the United States are welcome too; we will review them in the same way under the laws that apply.

Counter-notices

If we removed material you posted because of a copyright notice and you believe it was removed by mistake or misidentification, you can send a counter-notice to the same agent. It must include:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. A description of the material that was removed and the address where it appeared before removal.
  3. A statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good faith belief that the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your name, address and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for the judicial district in which your address is located (or, if your address is outside the United States, any judicial district in which we may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice or their agent.

When we receive a valid counter-notice, we will send a copy to the person who sent the original notice. We may restore the material in 10 to 14 business days unless they tell us that they have filed a court action to stop the infringement.

Repeat infringers

We close the accounts of readers who repeatedly infringe the copyright of others, in appropriate circumstances.
