This Cookie Policy explains how Double Crochet and our partners use cookies and similar technologies on https://doublecrochet.io. Read it alongside our Privacy Policy.

What cookies and similar technologies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves in your browser. It lets the site recognize your browser when you come back or move between pages. Similar technologies include browser storage (such as "local storage"), pixels and scripts that read or store information on your device. In this policy we call all of them "cookies".

Cookies set by Double Crochet are "first-party" cookies. Cookies set by another company, such as Google or a store we link to, are "third-party" cookies.

How we ask for consent

Strictly necessary cookies are needed for the site to work, so we do not ask for consent to use them. We ask for your consent before setting any advertising, affiliate or other non-essential cookies where the law requires it, including in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Our consent message is provided by a Google-certified consent management platform. Visitors in US states with privacy laws can opt out of targeted advertising through the same message.

You can change your choice at any time with the Privacy and cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.

Strictly necessary cookies and storage

These keep the site secure and make features you ask for work. They do not track you across other websites.

  • dc_session (Double Crochet): keeps you signed in to your reader account. It holds a random code, cannot be read by page scripts and expires after 30 days or when you sign out. Only set if you sign in.
  • dc_member (Double Crochet): tells the page that you are signed in so it can show your account menu and saved items. It holds no personal information and expires with your session. Only set if you sign in.
  • Editor sign-in cookies (Double Crochet): our content management system sets session and security cookies for editors who sign in to the admin area. Readers never receive these.
  • __cf_bm, cf_clearance, _cfuvid and other Cloudflare cookies (Cloudflare, our hosting provider): may be set when Cloudflare's security features are active, to tell people from bots, remember that your browser passed a security check, or apply rate limits fairly. __cf_bm expires after 30 minutes of inactivity. Cloudflare does not use them to track you from site to site. See Cloudflare's cookie list.
  • Consent cookies (our consent management platform, operated by Google): remember the choices you make in our consent message, so we do not ask again on every page.

Preference storage

These remember choices you make. They stay in your browser and are not sent to us.

  • theme (cookie, Double Crochet): remembers whether you picked the light or dark theme. Lasts one year. Only set if you choose a theme yourself.
  • dc-calc-terms (local storage, Double Crochet): remembers whether you prefer US or UK crochet terms.
  • dc-calc-units (local storage, Double Crochet): remembers whether you use inches or centimetres in the calculators.
  • dc_recent_calcs (local storage, Double Crochet): lists the last few calculators you opened, so the "Recently used" bar can show them.
  • dc_learn_progress (local storage, Double Crochet): remembers which lessons you have ticked off in the Learn to Crochet course.

You can clear these at any time by clearing your browser's site data for Double Crochet.

Advertising cookies

We use Google AdSense to show ads. Where you have agreed, or where consent is not legally required, Google and other ad technology providers may set and read cookies such as those Google lists in its advertising technologies page (for example IDE, DSID, __gads, __gpi and similar). They are used to:

  • show ads, including personalized ads based on your visits to this and other websites,
  • limit how often you see the same ad,
  • measure how ads perform and prevent fraud.

If you do not agree to personalized ads, Google may still use cookies or local storage for non-personalized ads, for example to cap frequency and detect fraud, where the law allows. The cookies, their lifetimes and the vendors involved can change; our consent message shows the current list of vendors and lets you choose by vendor and purpose.

You can also opt out of personalized advertising through Google's Ads Settings, www.aboutads.info/choices or www.youronlinechoices.eu. Google explains its practices in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

Affiliate cookies

When you click an affiliate link, for example to Amazon or Etsy, the store or its affiliate network sets a cookie on its own website to record that you came from Double Crochet. That lets it pay us a commission if you buy something. These cookies are set by the store after you leave our site and are governed by the store's own privacy and cookie notices, such as the Amazon Privacy Notice and Etsy's Privacy Policy.

How to control cookies

  • Our consent message: use the Privacy and cookie settings link in the footer to accept, reject or customize non-essential cookies, or to withdraw consent.
  • Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends a GPC signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of targeted advertising for that browser.
  • Your browser: most browsers let you block or delete cookies and site data in their settings. If you block strictly necessary cookies, you will not be able to sign in, and some features will not work.
  • Industry opt-outs: the opt-out pages listed in the advertising section above.

Changes to this policy

We will update this policy when we change the cookies we use, and change the "Last updated" date at the top.
