Double Crochet publishes crochet patterns, stitch guides, calculators, reviews and buying guides to help you make things you love. Please read this disclaimer before relying on anything you find here.

General information only

Everything on the site is for general information, education and enjoyment. We work hard to make our instructions clear and accurate, but we cannot promise that every page is complete, error-free or up to date. Use the site at your own discretion.

Patterns and finished results

Crochet results depend on your yarn, hook, tension, technique and the way you measure. Two people following the same pattern can end up with different sizes. Always make a gauge swatch before starting a project where size matters, and compare it with the gauge given in the pattern. Yarn amounts, finished sizes and making times are guides, not guarantees. Yarn colours on screen may differ from the real thing.

Each pattern states whether it uses US or UK crochet terms. The same stitch name means different stitches in the two systems, so check which terms a pattern uses before you start.

If you find a mistake in a pattern, please tell us through our contact page so we can fix it for everyone.

Calculators

Our calculators do the arithmetic for you based on the numbers you enter. Many of them, for example yarn amount and time estimates, rely on averages and are labelled as estimates. Results are only as good as the measurements you give them. Always buy a little extra yarn, preferably from the same dye lot, and check the results against your own swatch before cutting, buying or committing to a large project.

Safety

  • Toys and baby items. Safety eyes, buttons, beads and small parts can come loose and are a choking hazard. For babies and children under 3, use embroidered features instead and make sure every part is sewn on securely. Check handmade toys regularly for wear. If you sell toys or items for children, you are responsible for meeting the toy and product safety laws where you sell them.
  • Materials. Some fibres can cause allergies or irritation. Check the yarn label for fibre content and care instructions, and follow the manufacturer's directions for any adhesives, stiffeners or dyes.
  • Hooks, needles and scissors are sharp. Keep them away from young children and pets.
  • Health. Long crochet sessions can strain your hands, wrists and shoulders. Take breaks. Any tips we give about comfort are general and are not medical advice; see a health professional if you have pain or an injury.
