Editorial Policy
Last updated: 28 October 2026
This page explains how we create the patterns, guides, calculators and reviews you read on Double Crochet, and the standards we hold ourselves to.
Our standards
- Accuracy first. We check stitch instructions, abbreviations and measurements against our own swatches and recognised references before we publish.
- Clear terminology. Every pattern says whether it uses US or UK crochet terms, and lists its skill level, yarn weight, hook size and gauge where they apply.
- Only real facts. We do not invent yarn amounts, sizes, test results, ratings or credentials. If we do not know something, we leave it out.
- Plain language. We write for real people with a hook in one hand, explaining every abbreviation and avoiding jargon.
Patterns
We mark a pattern as tested only when it has actually been made from the written instructions. Where a pattern comes from a reader or a guest designer, we credit them by name. If you spot an error, tell us and we will fix it and note significant corrections on the page.
Calculators
Our calculators use published standards and the formulas described on each calculator page. Results that depend on averages, such as yarn amounts and time, are labelled as estimates. We explain the method below each calculator so you can check our working.
Reviews and buying guides
- We judge products on how well they work for crocheting: comfort, grip, finish, size accuracy, value and durability.
- We say how we formed our opinion, for example hands-on use or the manufacturer's published specifications, and we only give a star rating when we have enough information to do so honestly.
- Brands cannot pay for a review, a rating or a place in a buying guide, and they never see a review before it is published.
- If a brand sends us a product free of charge, we say so on the page.
- We never copy customer reviews or star ratings from stores.
Advertising and affiliate links
Double Crochet is supported by ads and affiliate commissions, as explained in our Affiliate Disclosure. Editorial decisions are made separately from commercial ones: whether a product earns us a commission never decides whether we recommend it. Ads are served by Google and are clearly separate from our content.
Use of AI tools
We may use software, including AI tools, to help with tasks such as checking spelling, organising notes or suggesting headings. A person writes, checks and approves everything we publish, and we never use AI to invent pattern details, test results or reviews. Reader submissions must tell us if AI tools were used to create them.
Corrections and updates
We review popular pages regularly and update them when techniques, products or prices change. When we correct a factual error, we fix it promptly, and for significant changes we add a note to the page. To report an error, use our contact page.
Reader contributions
Articles written by readers are reviewed and edited by our editors before publication and are published under the author's name. Comments are moderated under our Community Guidelines.
