Crochet Moon and Star Charm for a Bookmark, Bag or Headphones

A crescent moon shaped in a single row and a five-pointed star from a magic ring, each doubled up and joined on a chain cord. Works as a bookmark, a bag charm or a headphone tie.

Two small shapes, two very different ways of getting there. The crescent moon is a single row along a short chain, where stitch heights rise and fall to bend it into a curve. The star is a ring of double crochet with five chain points worked around it. Make two of each, seam them together, and join them with a long chain: a bookmark with a moon at one end and a star at the other, or a charm for your bag or headphones.

The pattern comes from Elise's video on her lilthings YouTube channel.

What you need

  • 5-ply milk cotton in pastel yellow and pink
  • 3.0 mm hook
  • A pinch of stuffing (optional, for puffier shapes)
  • Scissors and a darning needle

Crescent moon (make 2)

With yellow, chain 8. Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work one row:

  1. 1 sc in the first chain
  2. 2 hdc in the next chain
  3. 2 dc in the next chain
  4. 3 tr in the centre chain
  5. 2 dc in the next chain
  6. 2 hdc in the next chain
  7. 1 sc and 1 sl st in the last chain

Because there are more stitches along the top edge than chains underneath, the row curls into a crescent. The 3 trebles in the middle make the widest point. Fasten off.

Star (make 2)

With pink:

  • Round 1: magic ring, chain 2, 10 dc in the ring. Pull the tail tight and sl st to the first dc. (10 sts)
  • Round 2 (points): [chain 3, 1 hdc in the 2nd chain from the hook, 1 dc in the next chain, skip 1 stitch of the ring, sl st in the next stitch] 5 times. (5 points)

Each point uses two stitches of the ring, so 5 points use all 10.

Joining

  1. Hold the two moons wrong sides together and whipstitch around the edge with the darning needle. Add a tiny bit of stuffing before you close it if you like. Do the same with the two stars.
  2. Chain 55 to 70 and attach one end to the moon and the other to the star. For a headphone tie, wrap the chain around your band before you decide how long to make it.

Tips

  • Points that curl: the star points sit flatter if your chain 3 is relaxed. If they twist, try working the hdc and dc into the back bump of the chain.
  • Lopsided crescent: count the stitches as you go; both halves should mirror each other around the 3 trebles.
  • Match the seam to the shape. Seaming with the same colour as the shape hides the stitches; a contrast colour turns the seam into a border.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to make two of each shape?

No. A single moon and star are flatter and quicker. Doubling them up hides the wrong side and gives the charm a bit of thickness, which is nicer for a bookmark.

How do I keep the magic ring from opening?

Weave the tail back through a few stitches in the opposite direction before you trim it. Our magic ring tutorial covers securing it.

Can I write the moon in UK terms?

Yes: sc becomes UK double crochet, hdc becomes half treble, dc becomes treble and tr becomes double treble. See our US and UK terms chart.
