Crochet Angry Emoji Hair Clip: The Anime Anger Mark

The cartoon anger mark, made in crochet and clipped into your hair: a 16-stitch ring, four square lobes, red embroidered lines and a felt-backed alligator clip.

Black crocheted anger symbol motif with red lines attached to a metal hair clip

If you've read manga or used emoji, you know this symbol: four little corners that pop up next to a character's head when they're cross. As a hair clip it's a funny, quick make: one round in a magic ring, one round of square lobes, a bit of embroidery and a clip glued on the back.

Elise of lilthings shows it in a short beginner video, and has a good suggestion for beginners: practise it in white first, where you can see the stitches, before making the real one in black.

Video tutorial by Elise on her YouTube channel, lilthings: watch "crochet ANGRY💢 hairclip tutorial | crochet beginner hairclip" on YouTube.

Written from the video. The lobe round is easiest to follow on screen.

Supplies

  • 5-ply milk cotton in black, red and (for a practice piece) white
  • 3.5 mm hook
  • A small piece of black felt
  • A metal alligator hair clip
  • Hot glue, scissors and a darning needle

The motif

Round 1: with black, make a magic ring, chain 2 and work 16 dc into the ring. Pull it closed and slip stitch to the first dc. (16 stitches)

Round 2 (four lobes): think of the 16 stitches as four groups of 4. Over each group, build a little square: chain 2, work 1 dc in each of the group's stitches, chain 2 and slip stitch back down into the ring round. Then move on to the next group. Elise shows exactly where each slip stitch lands; the aim is four equal squares with a small gap between each.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Embroidery

Thread red yarn onto the darning needle. On each lobe, stitch an L-shaped line that follows the inner corner of the square, with the corner of the L pointing towards the centre. Four Ls give you the classic anger mark.

Work from the back and keep the stitches short, so they lie flat on the surface.

Clip

  1. Trace the motif onto black felt and cut out a slightly smaller shape.
  2. Snip a small slit in the felt and slide the lower prong of the alligator clip through it.
  3. Glue the felt, with the clip in place, to the back of the motif.

The felt covers the back of the stitches and holds the clip firmly, so the motif doesn't twist in your hair.

Tips

  • Black yarn is hard to see. Work in good light, and feel for the top of each stitch with your fingertip rather than relying on your eyes.
  • Square corners. If your lobes look round, pull the chain 2s at the top corners a little tighter.
  • Glue sparingly. Too much hot glue soaks through the stitches and shows on the front.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make it without the clip?

Yes. Glue a brooch pin or magnet on the back instead, or sew it onto a beanie or a bag.

What does the symbol mean?

It's the "anger vein" mark from Japanese manga: a stylised throbbing vein. The emoji version is 💢.

My magic ring has a hole in the middle.

16 double crochets is a lot for a small ring; pull the tail firmly and slowly, then weave it through the back. Our magic ring guide shows how to lock it.
