A mirror ringed with soft pastel flowers has become a favourite piece of crochet room decor, and it's easier than it looks: it's one small flower made fifteen times. Each flower has five chubby petals, and each petal is a puff stitch that spans two stitches of the centre ring, which is what makes the petals so wide and rounded.

Elise demonstrates the flower and the mirror on her lilthings YouTube channel.

Written from Elise's video. The puff petal is easier to understand once you have watched it once.

You'll need

  • 5-ply milk cotton in pink, white and yellow
  • 3.0 mm hook
  • A small round mirror without a frame (or with a flat frame)
  • A hot glue gun, scissors and a darning needle

The flower

Centre ring

Magic ring, chain 1, 10 sc in the ring. Pull the tail tight and slip stitch to the first sc. Think of the 10 stitches as 5 pairs: one petal per pair.

One puff petal

  1. Chain 4. This is the right-hand side of the petal.
  2. Three loops in the first stitch: yarn over, insert the hook in the first stitch of the pair, pull up a tall loop to the height of the chain, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Do this 3 times. You now have 4 loops on the hook.
  3. Three loops in the second stitch: do the same three times in the second stitch of the pair. You now have 7 loops on the hook.
  4. Close it: yarn over and pull through all 7 loops in one go.
  5. Chain 4 and slip stitch into the same second stitch. This is the left-hand side.

Slip stitch into the next stitch, then repeat steps 1 to 5 for the other four petals.

Bobble centre

With yellow, chain 3. Work 3 unfinished double crochets into the first chain (4 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 4, chain 2 and slip stitch into the same chain. Tie the yellow tails through the middle of the flower from the back.

Making the mirror

Make about 15 flowers, alternating the petal colours. Lay them around the mirror before gluing, so the spacing is even and the colours don't bunch up. Then glue them on one by one, pressing each flower's centre down for a few seconds.

Tips for fat, even petals

  • Pull the loops up to the chain height. Short loops make flat petals. Lift each loop until it is level with the top of the chain 4.
  • Pull through 7 loops slowly. Turn the hook so the throat faces down and ease it through; if it sticks, the loops are too tight.
  • Same tension on both sides. The petal is symmetrical only if the chain 4s on each side match.
  • Weave the ends in before gluing. Once a flower is glued down, the back is gone.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a puff stitch or a bobble?

The petals are made like a puff stitch: unfinished stitches pulled through together. Our cluster, bobble and popcorn guide explains how the three differ.

What else can I do with the flowers?

Glue them onto a hair clip, sew them onto a bag or a hat, or join them into a garland.

How many flowers do I need for my mirror?

Lay one flower on the mirror's edge and measure across it. Divide the mirror's circumference by that width to get a rough count.
