Crochet Cat Coaster with a Little Bow
A flat double crochet circle with two pointed cat ears shaped into the last round, each from a cluster of trebles in one stitch, plus a tiny bow tied on below one ear.

Bear ears are round; cat ears are pointed. This coaster is the same kind of flat circle as a bear coaster, but its last round packs a cluster of trebles, with a chain at the top, into one stitch, and that makes a sharp little ear. A tiny pink bow, tied on through the coaster, finishes it.
Elise's video on her lilthings channel is aimed at complete beginners and goes through each stitch of the ears slowly.

Materials
- 5-ply milk cotton in cream and pink
- 3.0 mm or 3.5 mm hook
- A stitch marker, scissors and a darning needle
The circle (rounds 1 to 4)
Start with a magic ring wrapped twice round your fingers (it holds better with 12 tall stitches). Chain 2 at the start of each round (not counted) and pull every slip stitch join tight.
Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
1 | 12 dc in the ring | 12 |
2 | 2 dc in each st | 24 |
3 | [1 dc, 2 dc in the next] × 12 | 36 |
4 | [2 dc in the next, 1 dc in each of the next 2] × 12 | 48 |
Ears and edge (round 5)
Chain 1, then work in order:
Stitch | Work |
|---|---|
1 | 1 sc |
2 | 1 dc |
3 | Ear: [1 dc, 2 tr, chain 1, 2 tr, 1 dc] all in this stitch |
4 | 1 dc |
5 to 13 | 1 sc in each (9 sc across the forehead) |
14 | 1 dc |
15 | Ear: [1 dc, 2 tr, chain 1, 2 tr, 1 dc] all in this stitch |
16 | 1 dc |
17 to 48 | 1 sc in each |
Join with a slip stitch and fasten off.
The chain 1 in the middle of each ear is what gives it a point. After the ear, the next stitch is often hidden under the cluster: lift the cluster out of the way and find it before you work the dc.
The bow
With pink, make a magic ring and work [chain 2, 2 dc, chain 2, slip stitch into the ring] twice. Pull the ring tight: those are the two loops. Wrap the tail round the middle a few times. Pull both tails through the coaster just below one ear and knot them firmly at the back.
Tips
- Count the forehead. The ears only sit right if there are 9 sc between the two ear groups.
- Flat circle check. After round 4, lay it down: it should be flat. If it ripples, the joins are adding stitches.
- Cotton for coasters. It takes the heat of a mug and soaks up drips.
Frequently asked questions
What's the double-wrapped magic ring?
You wrap the yarn round your fingers twice instead of once, so the ring has two strands. It's sturdier and less likely to come loose, which helps with tall stitches. Our magic ring guide shows both versions.
Can I make a bear instead?
Yes: the bear coaster uses the same circle with round ears.
Will the bow come off in the wash?
Knot the tails firmly at the back and weave them in. For a coaster that's washed often, sew the bow on instead.
