Blue crocheted mesh triangle beach cover-up with a white and blue starfish clip

A big open mesh grows fast, which makes this beach cover-up a quick project. It's a triangle that starts at its point and grows one mesh window per row; tie the two top corners round your hips over a swimsuit, or stop earlier and wear it as a bandana. The little starfish can be sewn on or glued to a hair clip.

Elise shows both in a short video on her lilthings channel.

Materials

  • 5-ply cotton in blue and white
  • 3.0 or 3.5 mm hook
  • Optional: a metal alligator clip and hot glue
  • Scissors and a darning needle

Mesh triangle

Row 1: with blue, chain 11: 5 for the slanted edge and 6 for the first window. Work 1 dc into the very first chain, chain 6, and 1 tr into that same first chain.

Every row after:

  1. Turn and chain 11 (5 for the edge, 6 for the first arch).
  2. Work 1 dc in the first chain-6 space of the row below.
  3. [Chain 6, 1 dc in the next chain-6 space] across.
  4. Finish with chain 6 and 1 tr into the 5th chain of the previous row's corner.

Each row adds a window, so the triangle widens on both sides. Work 25 rows for a sarong, or fewer for a bandana. Try it round your hips as it grows.

Starfish

Centre: with white, make a magic ring, chain 3 and work 15 dc into it. Join.

Arms (5): for a large starfish, chain 8. Skip the first 2 chains, 1 hdc in the 3rd chain, then 1 dc in each of the remaining 5 chains. Slip stitch into every 3rd stitch of the centre circle to anchor the arm, and repeat 4 more times.

For a small starfish: chain 7, then 1 hdc and 4 dc.

Border: join blue and work single crochet round all 5 arms: [6 sc up one side of the arm, 2 sc in the tip, 6 sc down the other side, 1 sc in the valley].

Sew the starfish onto the cover-up, or glue it to an alligator clip so it's removable.

Tips

  • Loose chains. The chain-6 arches need to be relaxed, or the mesh pulls into a narrow triangle.
  • Cotton for the beach. It dries quickly and copes with sea water and sun cream better than acrylic.
  • Block the starfish flat so its arms point evenly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I wear it?

As a sarong, tie the two long corners at your hip with the point hanging down the side. As a bandana, make a smaller triangle and tie it at the back of your head.

Can I add a border?

Yes: a round of single crochet or small shells along the two slanted edges gives it a finished look.

What size starfish should I make?

The large one (chain 8) for decorating the cover-up, the small one (chain 7) for a hair clip.
