Easy Crochet Fingerless Hand Warmers Worked in the Round
A tube of double crochet in joined rounds, with a thumbhole made on the go from slip stitches and a chain bridge, and a shell border at the knuckles. Nothing to sew.

Hand warmers are a tube with a hole for the thumb, and this pattern makes that hole without any sewing. You crochet a tube of double crochet from the wrist up. At the thumb, one round of slip stitches stays low over 8 stitches, and the next round jumps across them with a chain. That leaves a neat opening, and you carry on up to the knuckles.
It's one of Elise's beginner winter projects on her lilthings channel.

Materials
- 5-ply milk cotton
- 3.0 mm hook
- A stitch marker, scissors and a darning needle
Sizing
Chain 40, or enough to slide over the widest part of your hand (across the knuckles, with your thumb tucked in). Join the chain into a ring with a slip stitch, taking care not to twist it.
If you change the number of chains, use the same number of stitches in every round.
Pattern
Start each round with a chain 2 and close it with a slip stitch into the first stitch.
Rounds 1 to 9 (wrist): 1 dc in each chain or stitch. (40)
Round 10 (bottom of the thumbhole): slip stitch loosely over the first 8 stitches. These are the thumb stitches: they add no height. Then chain 2 and work 32 dc around the rest.
Round 11 (top of the thumbhole): chain 5 and skip the 8 thumb stitches, then work 1 dc in each of the 32 palm stitches.
Round 12: work dc across the chain-5 bridge and around the palm. To keep the glove the same width as the wrist, work 8 dc into the bridge, bringing the round back to 40.
Next 3 or 4 rounds: 1 dc in each stitch until the glove reaches your knuckles. Try it on as you go.
Border: finish the top with a shell or ruffle edge, as Elise does; for example, [skip 1, 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 1, slip stitch in the next stitch] around, if your count divides by 4.
Make a second glove the same way: it fits either hand.
Tips
- Don't twist the ring. Lay the chain flat with the bumps all facing the same way before you join it.
- Loose slip stitches in round 10 matter. Tight ones pull the bottom of the thumbhole in and it pinches.
- Mark the thumb stitches. Put a marker on the first and eighth stitch in round 9, so you know exactly where the hole starts and ends.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a left and a right glove?
No. Because the thumbhole is just a gap in the tube, both gloves are the same.
How do I make them longer?
Add rounds before the thumbhole for a longer cuff, or after it to cover more of your fingers.
My gloves are too tight over the knuckles.
Start with more chains: a tube of double crochet doesn't stretch much. Use the gauge calculator to work out how many stitches you need for your hand measurement.
