Crochet 3D Heart Keychain: Two Lobes Joined into One

A plump stuffed heart made from two little domes joined into one 24-stitch round, then tapered to a point with decreases at the sides. A sweet keychain or gift.

A stuffed heart has two round tops and one point, and this pattern builds it in that order. You make two little domes, one for each top of the heart. Then you join them into a single round, like a figure of eight, and work down, decreasing at the two sides until the heart tapers to a point.

The joining round is the clever bit, and once you've done it you can use it for any amigurumi that starts as two parts, such as a pair of legs joined into one body. The pattern is from Elise's video on her lilthings channel.

Video tutorial by Elise on her YouTube channel, lilthings: watch "how to crochet heart for beginner | easy crochet idea, heart amigurumi, crochet keychain" on YouTube.

The rounds are written from the video.

Materials

  • 5-ply milk cotton in pink or red
  • 3.0 mm hook
  • Stuffing and a keychain clasp
  • A stitch marker, scissors and a darning needle

The lobes (make 2)

Work in spirals, moving the marker up each round.

  • Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: inc in each stitch. (12)
  • Round 3: 1 sc in each stitch. (12)

Fasten off the first lobe with a short tail. Make the second lobe the same way, but don't cut the yarn.

Joining (round 4)

With the second lobe still on your hook, put the hook into the first stitch of lobe 1. Work 12 sc around lobe 1, then carry straight on and work 12 sc around lobe 2. (24)

The two domes are now one round in a figure-eight shape. Use lobe 1's tail to close the little gap where they meet.

Shaping the point (rounds 5 to 10)

  • Round 5: 1 sc in each stitch. (24)
  • Rounds 6 to 10: decrease at the left and right sides of the heart, with the same number of decreases on each side, going from 24 down to 18, then 12, then 6 stitches. Elise shows where each decrease goes; the aim is to keep them on the outer edges, not in the middle of the front or back.

Use the invisible decrease: insert the hook through the front loops only of two stitches and finish them as one sc.

Stuff the lobes and the body firmly before round 9, while there's still room. After round 10, cut a 15 cm tail, weave it through the front loops of the last 6 stitches and pull tight to close the point. Sew the clasp to the top, between the lobes.

Tips

  • Mark the sides. Put a marker at each side of the heart after round 4, so the decreases always line up at the edges.
  • Stuff the lobes first. Push stuffing into each dome before filling the middle, or the tops come out flat.
  • Sharp point: pull the closing tail hard, then push it through the heart and out the top to bury it.

Frequently asked questions

Why join two lobes instead of starting at the point?

Starting at the top gives you two neat round lobes and a clean dip between them. Starting at the point makes the lobes harder to shape.

My heart is lopsided.

The decreases have drifted towards the front or back. Keep them exactly at the sides, using your markers.

Can I make a flat heart instead?

Yes: see the one-round mini heart. It's made in a single magic ring and takes a few minutes.
