Crochet Plush Bunny with a Lemon Hat, Dress and Backpack
A cuddly bunny in plush yarn, with long lop ears and arms crocheted straight into the body. Then dress it up: a lemon hat with holes for the ears, a little dress and a lemon backpack.

This is a full plushie project: a soft white bunny with long ears, and a whole outfit, a lemon hat, a dress and a tiny backpack. It's the longest video in Elise's beginner series on her lilthings channel, at over an hour, but each piece is small and the techniques build on each other.
Two smart tricks make it easier than most amigurumi. The legs are joined into the body as you go, and the arms are crocheted into the body round rather than sewn on later, so there's very little sewing.

Materials
- Light plush yarn in white, yellow, and green or blue
- 4.0 mm hook
- Safety eyes and pink embroidery yarn
- Stuffing, stitch markers, pins, scissors and a darning needle
Plush yarn is soft and fuzzy, so its stitches are hard to see. Count every round, and keep a marker in the first stitch.
Head
Joined rounds: slip stitch and chain 1 at the end of each round.
Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
1 | 6 sc in a magic ring | 6 |
2 | inc × 6 | 12 |
3 | [1 sc, inc] × 6 | 18 |
4 | [1 sc, inc, 1 sc] × 6 | 24 |
5 | [3 sc, inc] × 6 | 30 |
6 | [2 sc, inc, 2 sc] × 6 | 36 |
7 to 10 | 1 sc in each st | 36 |
11 | [2 sc, invisible dec, 2 sc] × 6 | 30 |
12 | [3 sc, invisible dec] × 6 | 24 |
13 | [1 sc, invisible dec, 1 sc] × 6 | 18 |
Fit the safety eyes before round 11. Stuff and fasten off, leaving a tail to sew the head to the body.
Ears (make 2)
Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
1 | 6 sc in a magic ring | 6 |
2 | inc × 6 | 12 |
3 | [1 sc, inc, 1 sc] × 4 | 16 |
4 to 12 | 1 sc in each st | 16 |
13 | [1 sc, invisible dec, 1 sc] × 4 | 12 |
14 to 16 | 1 sc in each st | 12 |
17 | [1 sc, dec] × 4 | 8 |
Flatten the top and work 4 sc through both layers to close it.
Arms (make 2)
6 sc in a magic ring, then 4 rounds of 6 sc. Don't stuff them; they'll be crocheted into the body.
Legs and body
Legs (make 2): round 1, 6 sc in a magic ring; round 2, inc × 6 (12); round 3, 12 sc in the back loops only.
Joining: join leg 2 to leg 1 with 2 slip stitches. Work round 4 all the way round both legs, 10 stitches on each (20).
Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
5 | [1 sc, inc] × 10 | 30 |
6 | 1 sc in each st | 30 |
7 | [3 sc, dec] × 6 | 24 |
Round 8 (arms): 5 sc on the body; 3 sc through the arm and the body together; 8 sc across the chest; 3 sc through the second arm and the body; 5 sc to the end. (24)
Round 9: work across the outer 3 stitches of each arm with [dec, sc] while decreasing the body down to 18.
Round 10: 18 sc. Stuff, then sew the head and ears on.
Lemon hat
With yellow:
- Rounds 1 and 2: 6 sc in a ring, then inc × 6. (12)
- Round 3 (ear holes): [1 sc, inc, chain 4, skip 3, inc] × 2. The chain 4s are the holes the ears go through.
- Round 4: work 5 sc into each chain-4 space.
- Rounds 5 to 8: keep growing the hat until it fits the head.
- Round 9 (brim): sc in the front loops only.
Add a small green leaf on top.
Dress
Chain 25 and join into a ring. Round 2: [4 dc, 2 dc in the next] × 5 (30). Round 3: 30 sc. Add a 5-dc bib at the front with two chain-14 straps over the shoulders.
Mini backpack
Make a tiny stuffed lemon (3 sc, then 6 sc) and add a chain-30 strap.
Tips
- Pin before sewing. Pin the head and ears in place and look from all sides before you sew.
- Plush yarn and markers. Count every round, especially the arm round, where it's easy to lose track.
- Fit the hat on the bunny. Try it on as you go: it should sit snugly with the ears through the holes.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a beginner project?
The techniques are beginner-level, but there are many pieces and the arm round needs care, so we've rated it intermediate. Make a chubby chicken or jellyfish first if amigurumi is new to you.
Can I use cotton instead of plush yarn?
Yes, and the stitches are much easier to see. The bunny will come out smaller with a cotton yarn and a smaller hook.
Is it safe for babies?
Not with safety eyes and small accessories. For a baby, embroider the eyes and leave off the backpack.
