Crochet Teddy Bear Cookie Sandwich Keychain

Two brown bear-shaped cookies with a cream filling: an oval of single crochet, then one round that shapes ears, cheeks, arms and feet straight into its edge. A bag charm that looks good enough to eat.

Crocheted teddy bear shaped cookie sandwich keychain in brown with a cream filling

Cookie sandwiches shaped like teddy bears are a favourite in bakeries, and this crochet version hangs from a bag. The neat trick is the bear's outline. Rather than sewing on ears, arms and legs, you shape them all in one round, by changing the height of the stitches as you go around an oval. Two brown bears and a cream oval sandwiched between them make the cookie.

The pattern is from Elise's video on her lilthings channel.

Written from the video. Round 4 shapes the whole bear and is easiest to follow on screen.

Materials

  • 5-ply milk cotton in cookie brown and cream
  • 3.0 mm hook
  • Brown felt for the face, and hot glue
  • Stitch markers, scissors and a darning needle
  • A keyring or bag clasp

The oval (rounds 1 to 3)

With brown, chain 10. Work the oval in rounds of single crochet: a straight run of 8 sc along each side of the chain, and 3 sc into the ends to turn the curve. Rounds 2 and 3 grow the ends with increases while the sides stay straight.

Put a marker at the start and end of each curved end. It shows you where the straight sides stop and the increases go.

The bear outline (round 4)

Round 4 goes all the way round the oval and turns it into a bear:

  • Ears (top): [1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc] in one stitch for each ear, with slip stitches across the forehead between them.
  • Cheeks: 3 sc in one stitch on each side of the head.
  • Arms: 3 dc in one stitch on each side of the body.
  • Feet (bottom): [1 dc, 3 tr, chain 2, slip stitch] for each foot.

Between these features, single crochet or slip stitch keeps the edge low, so each feature stands out. Make 2 brown bears.

Filling and assembly

  1. With cream, work rounds 1 to 3 of the oval. This is the filling: it has no ears or feet, so it shows only round the middle.
  2. Lay the cream oval between the two bears and glue or sew the three layers together.
  3. Cut eyes and a snout from felt and glue them onto the front bear.
  4. Attach the keyring through one ear.

Tips

  • Same stitch counts on both bears so the outlines match when you stack them.
  • Contrast is the point. Keep the cookie a warm brown and the cream light, so the filling shows as a stripe from the side.
  • Glue in dots. A line of hot glue all round is stiff and can show at the edge.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make it without the filling?

Yes: a single bear is a cute flat charm. The filling just makes it look like a sandwich cookie.

How do the features stand out?

They're made of taller stitches (dc and tr) next to short ones (sc and slip stitches). The tall stitches poke out, and the short ones pull in.

Can I embroider the face instead of using felt?

Yes. Use black or dark brown yarn and a darning needle, and stitch the eyes and nose before you assemble the cookie.
